Onam – A Celebration of Harvest

The lush green paddy fields, the ripe yellow bananas, the grandeur of pink Lotus flowers, and we know that the magnificent harvest festival of ONAM from the enchanting land of Kerala, is just around the corner. Onam is the biggest annual festival mostly celebrated in the Southern state of India. Onam usually falls between August – September, and the extended celebrations last for ten days. It commemorates New Year’s Day and is also recognized as a harvest festival.

Onam has a great religious significance among the people of Kerala. The origins of Onam dates back to the Satyug period when the mighty King Mahabali was humbled by Vaamana. The most common religious significance is the story of King Mahabali’s devotion and selflessness. The festival of Onam is considered a time of feasting and cultural bonding, bringing people from all walks of life together.

To mark this joyous occasion of Onam, an assembly was conducted, by the students of grade III-A. The assembly started with a prayer, a word for the day, and thought for the day which continued with a few amazing facts, and some news updates. The assembly depicted the gratitude of people towards the land for giving a good harvest. The little Dipsites showcased the significance of prayers offered to lord Vamana and their beloved King Mahabali, for the well-being and longevity of their family members. How can our celebration end without a rejoicing Dance? A charismatic and traditional dance form – Mohiniattam was performed by our students, which added splendor to the day.

The assembly concluded with our Indian National Anthem.
